Answers to Common Questions About Therapy at Base Behavioral Health
  • Is what I share in therapy confidential?
    Yes, your privacy is protected by law and our professional ethics. There are specific limitations to confidentiality, including risk of harm to yourself or others, suspected abuse of children or vulnerable adults, court orders, and insurance billing requirements. Your therapist will discuss these limitations in detail during your first session.
  • How do you protect my privacy with telehealth sessions?
    We use a HIPAA-compliant telehealth platform that encrypts all video sessions. We recommend you find a private location for your sessions where you won't be overheard. Your therapist will conduct sessions from a private, secure location as well.
  • Will my family, spouse, or employer know I’m in therapy?
    No. Your participation in therapy is completely confidential. We will not disclose any information or confirm your involvement without your written consent through a Release of Information (ROI). The only exceptions are the standard legal and ethical limits to confidentiality, as outlined in our Base Behavioral Health Intro Packet.
  • Do you accept insurance?
    Yes, we are in-network with most insurance providers. Please visit our website for a list of accepted insurances. Once you're scheduled with a therapist and provide your insurance information, we’ll conduct a benefits check before your appointment. You’re also welcome to contact your insurance company directly to confirm your therapist is in-network with your plan.
  • What is your cancellation policy?
    We kindly ask for at least 24 hours’ notice for cancellations to avoid a late cancellation fee. For details on fees for cancellations made with less than 24 hours’ notice, please visit our website. We understand that emergencies happen and will handle these situations with care and understanding. To cancel an appointment, you can email your therapist, send a message through the CarePaths client portal, or call our main office.
  • Do you offer telehealth or virtual therapy sessions?
    Yes, we offer secure video therapy sessions through the CarePaths client portal. Many clients find virtual therapy to be a convenient and effective alternative to in-person sessions. Please note that clients must be physically located in the state of Oregon and in a private, confidential setting during sessions.
  • Are in-person sessions available at Base Behavioral Health?
    Yes, in-person sessions are available. Many of our therapists offer them on designated days and times. If you prefer to meet in person, please let us know when making your request.
  • What is therapy and how can it help me?
    Therapy is a collaborative process with a trained mental health professional to explore your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It can help you manage stress, anxiety, depression, relationship issues, trauma, and many other challenges, while also supporting personal growth and emotional wellness.
  • How do I choose the right therapist for me?
    Choosing the right therapist is an important part of your mental health journey. We encourage you to consider factors such as a therapist’s specialization, experience, therapeutic approach, and personality fit. It’s completely okay to try a session or two before deciding whether you feel comfortable. If at any point you feel that another therapist on our team might be a better match for your needs, please don’t hesitate to let your current therapist know. We’re here to support you in finding the best fit for your care.
  • How long does therapy typically last?
    The length of therapy varies depending on your specific needs and goals. Some clients benefit from short-term therapy (8-12 sessions), while others find longer-term therapy more beneficial. Your therapist will discuss recommendations during your treatment planning, and the plan will be regularly reviewed.
  • What types of therapy approaches do you use?
    Our therapists are trained in various evidence-based approaches, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), EMDR for trauma treatment, and many others. Your therapist will use approaches that best fit your specific needs and goals.
  • What to expect when starting therapy?
    Starting therapy is a significant step, and we're here to make the process as smooth as possible. Your care at Base Behavioral Health begins with a one-hour Intake with a therapist. During this session, we’ll explore your current concerns, begin initial treatment planning, and determine the appropriate level and intensity of care based on diagnosis and medical necessity. Following the Intake, you'll have the opportunity to schedule ongoing therapy sessions in alignment with the recommendations discussed. Before Your First Appointment Please complete the intake documents sent to your email through our client portal Base Behavioral Health will send you a confirmation email with your appointment information and instructions on how to log into your Carepaths, client portal. You must complete ALL of your intake paperwork in your client portal within 24 hours of scheduling or you will be notified your appointment will be canceled. Contact the main office if you have questions. Read BBH Intro packet ​We will send you an insurance benefits email to understand your benefits before starting therapy. Contact the main office if you have questions. Be prepared to discuss your goals for therapy All sessions are 50-60 minutes. Your first session will focus on understanding your concerns and developing an initial treatment plan together. After Intake You and your therapist will discuss if you would like to move forward with appointments and will start scheduling together. Your therapist will continue to monitor your goals in therapy and re-assess if different services are needed. Assessments will be provided in Carepaths for continued monitoring on goals and therapy. You and your therapist will discuss a discharge date once you have completed your treatment plan goals.
  • How often can I attend therapy?
    The frequency and duration of your therapy sessions will be determined based on your progress and personalized treatment plan, developed in collaboration with your therapist. This will be discussed with you following your intake assessment.
  • Do you offer group therapy?
    While group therapy may be part of your care plan, we are not currently offering group sessions. However, you may be referred to external group therapy options and continue attending individual sessions at Base Behavioral Health.
  • Do I need to complete the Assessments in Carepaths?
    Carepaths, our electronic health record system sends out three assessments (outcome measurement tools) every 30 days. These tools help your therapist measure and track the effectiveness of your mental health services. They not only support therapeutic alliance and progress in therapy but are also often required by insurance providers as part of service accountability.
